Intro
This guide is centered around Crossbow Men / Snipers, who chose to go FA-less.
Unlike mose bowmen guides that are centered mostly around hunters, this one takes into account the specifics of using a crossbow. Being a FA-less Sniper is an awesome experience, that mixes huge damage, eye candy skills, and strategy. This build is intended of course to those who want to reach 3rd job (Sniper) and experience the game at these levels. cheap maple story powerleveling
Common questions
What does "FA-less" mean ?
It means skipping the 2nd jop skill, "Final Attack", entirely. This allow people who do it to max almost all other 1st and 2nd job skills, and enter 3rd job with a complete collection of skills.
Why would one want to skip that skill ?
* It disrupts the Iron Arrow flow. IA is used to mow down mobs of monsters, and since it does not stun them, the xbow man has to keep attacking with IA until the mob is gone - IA has a very good kickback due to high attack power concentrated in one single arrow. If a Final Attack pops out during that process, the arrow that is fired will hit the 1st monster of the stack, while the remaining monsters will overrun the xbow man, making him whack on next attack or run to find another shooting position.
* Xbowmen have a slightly slower firing rate meaning the Final Attack slows down this process even more.
* this skill does NOT work all the time making it unreliable - for instance if you want to rely on it to 1 hit KO monsters you cant
* When FA activates it prevents you from jumping. It's a very bad thing in front of ground thumping monsters (like Yetis) or bosses.
* It does not work with 3rd job attack skills (Strafe, Blizzard). So basically it becomes useless after level 71 - waste of skill points.
* Still in beta-test in KMS FA prevents maxing other skills like Focus or Mastery, which you have to max in order to have access to some 4th job skills. cheap maple story powerleveling
But aint levelling easier with FA ?
Maybe so, but again you have to factor the lack of mobbing ability of this skill, as it disrupts Iron Arrow, and the fact there are places to train on mobs (with IA) that still give good experience. Overall the levelling speed to 3rd job is very slow for ALL bowmen, especially in the high 40's up to level 70.. Bowman is a class that takes dedication.
Arrow Blow or Double Shot ?
The answer would be Double Shot as it's more efficient (it deals more damage).
Some people choose to go with Arrow Blow still, because of it's inherent strong kickback power.
All in all if you plan to reach 3rd job (which this build is about) it wont make a difference in the long run, just more time to level during 2nd job, but after you'll be using Strafe anyway. cheap maple story powerleveling
What about AP ?
The AP allocation for crossbowmen is the easiest:
STR = your level
DEX = put everything else there
INT = 4
LUK = 4
What i did after level 40 (for example at levels 7x) is i raise DEX 5 times on levels 70 to 78, then STR 5 times on levels 79 and 80, like this:
Code:
70: DEX +5
71: DEX +5
72: DEX +5
73: DEX +5
74: DEX +5
75: DEX +5
76: DEX +5
77: DEX +5
78: DEX +5
79: STR +5
80: STR +5
The same applies from 40 to 50, 50 to 60 and so on. Adjust for lower levels (raise STR at levels 22, 28, 32, and 38 to get weapons)
I also adjust the STR allocation to minimum according to the +STR bonus of my clothes... For instance if i have +2 STR on my clothes, i'll only get 78 STR at level 80.
The objective is to put as many points into DEX as possible, as it means more damage !
Note under level 15 you can put more points in STR if you plan to use a close combat weapon, just dont raise it over 18 (required STR for the battle crossbow), here's an example of build start:
Code:
1: (creation): STR=8, DEX=9, INT=4, LUK=4 (note your STR and DEX will certainly be different !)
2: STR +5
3: STR +5 (STR=18 at this stage, enough to get the level 18 xbow and deal some melee damage)
4: DEX +5
5: DEX +5
6: DEX +5
7: DEX +5
8: DEX +5
9: DEX +5
10: DEX +5 (DEX=44 at this stage, more than enough to become a bowman)
11 to 21: DEX+5
22: STR+4, DEX+1 (STR=22 to get the Balanche)
23 to 26: DEX+5
27: DEX+4, STR+1
28: STR+5 (STR=28 to get the Mountain Xbow)
etc.
Weapons and equips
Under level 30 (Beginner, 1st job)
Weapons: you can use a melee weapon until level 12 or until level 18. The Battle Crossbow is your first real damage dealing weapon. Note that with my build you can use Arrow Blow from level 12 (with the basic Crossbow) if you are funded. Otherwise use normal attacks or use melee until level 18. Get the Balanche and Mountain Crossbow of course.
Armour: just get whatever fits your taste, the level 15 suit is sexy and can do very well. The damage soak is low anyway and it wont make much difference for now.
Scrolling other items: no need to scroll anything at this point.
Level 30-37
Weapons: get the Eagle Crow. A slightly above average one brings a small advantage. If you're funded you can use 100% scrolls on it. If you're not funded dont bother with scrolls.
Armour: Get a sauna robe (do the quest) and two options: if you're very rich (funded) and lucky, try 60% dex scrolls on it. If you're a normal player just use 10x 100% dex scrolls on it. Icarus cape 2 is a good choice too. Dont bother too much with the rest.
Scrolling other items: no need to scroll anything else at this point.
Level 38-49
Weapons: get the Heckler. Try to get an above average one, scroll it with 60%'s (save money for the scrolls !). If you're funded or rich buy several Heckler's and try 10%'s on them until one works on 1st slot, then 60% the rest. Goal is to reach at least 64 attack. Then keep the Heckler until level 50, its fast attack owns plus it looks very nice. Skip the Silver Crow completely.
Armour: keep your scrolled sauna, unless you're attracted by the sexy looks of the Piette (Piettra for girls). Do the doll quest to get the black hat at level 40 it's worth it.
Scrolling other items: you can scroll your hat for HP if you're funded, otherwise dont bother with anything but your Heckler. It's also the time when you can start either scrolling your own gloves, or get attack gloves. +8 att is the nice spot, over that it's excellent (but very rare / expensive)
Level 50-59
Weapons: buy a rower, try to scroll it with 60%'s if you havent found a pre-scrolled one. 80 attack rowers are found on market for acceptable prices...
Armour: time to ditch the sauna and get the new bowman bathrobe, the Kismet (kimono look-a-like). Again drop all 100% dex's on it. Get a black maro for the added dex.
Scrolling other items: you can scroll your boots for speed if you've got money to blow. Get a good cape, use dex scrolls on it if you can (100%'s are a good option).
Level 60-69
Weapons: that's a good thing Golden Crows are now quite easy to find (thus, cheap) because you'll probably have one for 20 long levels from now. Get a very good one (80 atk clean is a good idea), scroll it with 60%'s. Aim for 88 atk minimum and you'll do very well.
Armour: get a blue or red tai if you can find one (they're not expensive, just rare) and either use a few 60% dex's if you have them and complete with 100%'s, or all 100%'s again.
Scrolling other items: again scroll the boots if you have the mesos. Get the gaia cape from the quest, scroll it according to your tastes.
Level 70-79
Weapons: Ha here's the problem. The mighty Gross Jaeger is dropped by uber strong monsters (Dark y&p, Gatekeeper) and a very rare find. Market prices are crazy (north of 15 millions..) so either you're very well funded, or very lucky, or you'll simply skip that weapon altogether. Getting a godly Golden Crow is rather easy there are plenty of them around with 90 atk or such.. Mess up a Gross Jaeger scrolling and you'll end up with a dud. It looks very nice however (only xbow with an actual sniper scope)
Armour: the Dark Linnex (Linneros for girls) is probably the last overall you'll get for a good while. They used to be dirt cheap because they were dropped by zombies, now it's vikings, still it's a popular training place, depending on the high level population of your server of course. Get a green or dark one of course, for best base DEX, then try a 10% on first slot, if it fails throw it away and repeat until the 10% works - then complete with 60%'s. Goal is to reach +18/+20 dex minimum.
Scrolling other items: if you're lucky and can put your hand on a (very rare) dark patriot, get it and scroll it for HP. Get or build the dark elf boots and scroll them too according to your tastes (speed, dex, whatever). Get a seraph cape and scroll it when you've got the money.
Level 80-89
Weapons: the Raven is an easy find on market, go buy some (golden one has my preference for included jump boost), use only 60% on your first one, then when you can afford having a whole collection of them try 10%'s. If you're filthy rich and very lucky you can get a dark raven, GL scrolling it, if it turns out godly (107+ attack) you'll be able to skip the Casa.
Armour: I've yet to find a Dark Pris (Pria for girls) on market.. They are very rare and in high demand. Prices go accordingly. At this point you know what to do anyway. The green stuff is easier to find.
Scrolling other items: time to get your last hat for a while, the Dark Falcon. Pretty cheap (common drop) so get many of them and scroll them for HP. Same for boots (Dark Wings boots) and gloves if you can afford scrolling them yourself (Dark Cordon).
Level 90+
Weapons: If you can find a nice Casa at a decent price, go for it and have a ranger scroll it for you :) (so you do not have to raise your STR immediately).
Armour: Green Ades is very easy to find (frequent drop at squids), other colours are harder to get a hold of, although the prices are very low. It will be probably your last overall for a long long time, so try to pass a 10% on first slot. Plan your build accordingly to the colour you chose, that means capping your STR at a lower level if you plan to get STR equips.
Other items: Dark Arlic is easy to find, the shoes are very rare, and the gloves (Focus) are not-so-rare but often overpriced.
Now to the level-by-level guide.
I'll use the following format:
(level): (skill) x(number of SP)
which means when you reach the said level, you'll put the said number of SP in the said skill.
1St Job: Bowman, Double Shot
Code:
10: Arrow Blow x1

Final 1st job (Double Shot) skill recap:
The Blessing of Amazon = 3 (/16)
Critical Shot ........ = 20 (MAX)
Amazon Eye ........... = 8 (MAX)
Focus ................ = 9 (/20)
Arrow Blow ........... = 1
Double Shot .......... = 20 (MAX)
Comments:
I put arrow blow early because
* it's mandatory in order to get Double Shot
* it's useful at level 1 (141% damage)
It can eat some potions though, so dont abuse it.
I choose important passive skills first, so you may use Arrow Blow until level 22-23.
You can choose Arrow Blow instead of Double Shot. In this case the end of the build looks like this:
1St Job: Bowman, Arrow Blow
Note: This build is not really recommended, unless you really know what you're doing. Generally Double Shot is advised as it's more efficient. Still Arrow Blow has its supporters, see above for discussion.
Code:
(... under 21: see above ...)
21: Critical Shot x1 (MAXed), Arrow Blow x2
22: Arrow Blow x3
23: Arrow Blow x3

25: Arrow Blow x3
26: Arrow Blow x3
27: Arrow Blow x2 (MAXed), Focus x1
28: Focus x3

The Blessing of Amazon: = 3 (/16) (4/16 if you went with AB)
Comments:
Iron Arrow at level 1 is already useful so use it early.
I choose to max Iron Arrow first as going FA-less means hunting mobs of monsters in order to get decent exp.
This means also having good jump-shooting skills, and scrolled (for speed) equipment.
I finally chosed to get Focus at the end of 2nd job, as it'll be at least more useful than anything else at this point.
Where to train when you're FA-less
Note: I dont really know about Ludi training places at these levels
30: PQ all the way to 31
31-37: Wild boars. Go see the dark axe stumps at Over The Wall or East Rocky Mountains for a change of pace (and less KSing). Experiment with Iron Arrow ! Another very good place is Masks at Excavation Site 3. Either way stay around Perion.
38-44: Fire boars, jr kitties are good choices. jr kitties upper platforms are excellent for exp when they're crowded (iron arrow through them !), or do Ludi PQ if you have the chance to get in. Also try Perion ruins again. In Ludi: Sky Terrace 2-4 (from level 40). The maps with pink teddies and the ducks. Fast spawn and exp is pretty good.
45-52: Copper drakes (solo or party) or Stone Golems (with party only, use Booster + Haste for fast exp), or solo at lunar pixies, or Ludi PQ until 51 if you like it. In Ludi: Sky Terrace 2-4, maybe up to level 50, mrstak reports being there at level 47. Platoon Chronos are said to be good both for mesos and experience.
53-59: jr yetis (Iron Arrow all the way, try to hit groups), luster pixies (same), dungeon drakes (slower, Double Shot most of the time).
60-65: Forest of Golem is very good, use Iron Arrow there to mob the golems and PKB if they spawn on you. Drakes meal table is not bad if you've got a party, best are Luster Pixies (bottom of last map, get a warrior team mate to clean the top), Zombies are not bad as well (again with someone else for 1/2 of the map, or else the spawn is too much spread apart), Dark Stone Golems are good both in solo and in party, Hectors wouldnt be too bad but the maps they're on are not very practical. Blins at KFT haunted house are reported to be good at these levels.
65-70: Zombies can be good with a party. So are lusters (but a bit less exp now). For a refreshing change, white yetis (transformed or not) can be fun. Dark golems are still a good bet with other ppl activating the spawn. White pangs are still a valid option. (no idea about ludi hunting places, i dont go there often) - If you kill fast enough, you can go to Forest of Golems for intense experience - Iron Arrow is still your friend.. Blins at KFT are still good.
The general idea with training in 2nd job, is to use Iron Arrow to its full potential: choose mobs of monsters you can hold back 6 by 6, and try to have a 1:1 or less kill ratio (1 shoot, 1 kill).
For example at lvl 53 at jr yetis, 4-5 shots = 6 kills. The ratio is good (and so is the exp). Or at lvl 50, about 5 shots = 6 kills at Copper Drakes. Try to keep this kind of ratio, and hit mobs of smaller monsters, instead of individual big monsters.
In terms of damage / MP efficiency, Iron Arrow is efficient on groups of 3 or more monsters, so try to lure the monsters (for example using a single arrow shot) so they follow you and form up a nice group that you can shoot Iron Arrow through. This technique is very efficient on more spread-out maps like Jr Yetis.

3rd job: Sniper, Low MB / Thrustless, early Blizzard
This is the build i have been following. In the 80's it's based on Blizzard + Iron Arrow combo to handle mobs
I'm very pleased with this build, it allows for fast and intense training up to level 100, squids from level 80's, to gobies from level 100's to sharks in levels 110's.

This is another variation on the original "Early Eruption" build, you cannot really compromise Strafe to get Eruption earlier.
You can still swap around Blizzard and Eagle if you like. This build is for people who want to get out of FoG / Zombies earlier.
Thanx to XBish for putting this build into shape.

Some questions people might ask
Why the 1st point in Blizzard at level 70 and not Strafe ?
* At level 70 you will be hunting zombies full time. Whatever your equips are, you'll need 2 hits to kill a zombie with Double Shot and Strafe. Yes it will not make any difference in your training speed.
* Strafe uses substantially more MP than Double Shot
* You'll still max Strafe at level 80 anyway
* Blizzard even at level 1 is amazing, and opens a whole new lot of possibilites in regard to monster hunting. Have fun going to Werewolves, Dark Yeti & Pepe and so on !
Why not delaying Strafe ?
It's the most important skill, maxing it means max damage, max training speed. I know it's tempting to raise the "fun" skills earlier but this way is the fastest to go through the painful 70->80 stage.
Why the low Mortal Blow ?
I am not convinced in the real efficiency or usefulness of that skill.
Eruption deals with the close combat already. With Blizzard, Puppet and Eagle mobs are supposed to stay away for starters. I wouldnt rely on a skill that does NOT work all the time (like Final Attack, by the way) especially in areas where monsters can kill me in 2 hits (areas where i'm training...)
Which 3rd job build to pick ?
As you noticed i proposed two builds for 3rd job. They involve different play styles, and different training locations.
The first build (early Blizzard) is based on popular party maps such as Vikings and Squids: all these monsters are freezable and cleaning up the mobs with Blizzard is really easy. It's also very Sniper-specific, FA-less Rangers that adapted my build wont be able to pick it up since Inferno has a radically different use and has to be maxed to be really effective. All in all those who learned to like Blizzard since level 70 (if they followed my guide) should use that build, they will not regret it. Many high level snipers actually did the same and were very happy with the results. The technique is just facing the mobs, freezing them, eventually PKB'ing some of them into shape and then mowing down the frozen group. It's a very aggressive technique and easier to master than strategic puppet placement.
The second build (Puppet / Arrow Eruption combo) is the "classic" bowman build, which is usually followed by Rangers. It allows early (in the nineties) training at Gobies, which is a popular solo training place. Otherwise the playstyle is radically different: instead of fighting the mobs head-on you lure them with Inferno or Iron Arrow, place a Puppet in a strategic location and either finish the mob with Eruption or strafe each monster. It's a more defensive technique, that requires some learning time in order to master.
Basically you have until level 78 to decide which build you want to follow, just know that in the end (after level 115) they lead to exactly the same result, so it will only influence your training locations and play style between levels 78 and 115.
Comments:
Being FA-less it's time to get on the offensive skills.
Blizzard is used to hunt monsters that we shouldn't :) Since Snipers can hit about every monster in this game, the only monsters we cannot hunt are those resistant to ice. The technique is simple:
Blizzard - Strafe - Strafe - Blizzard - Strafe - Strafe - repeat...
(you can replace Strafe with Double Shot at level 70 - and you can add in-between strafes at higher levels since the freeze timer increases)
Just make sure that once you pressed the Blizzard key, you *immediately* press the Strafe key, dont wait fot the shooting animation to end, then Strafe will chain, otherwise there will be a delay that only allows you 1 strafe before the monster unfreezes and starts moving again.
I may drop thrust at the end, to put more points in Mortal Blow, if this skill is really worth it.
Otherwise the rest of the build is now quite definitive, i have spent a lot of time thinking on it and tweaking it.
Where to train when you're FA-less AND 3rd job
Levels 70-78: Zombies and Forest of Golems are your best exp getter (a bit over 10% an hour). For a quick change i tried transforming Yetis (Sharp Cliff I) and they werent so bad, although they are a money loss (HP pots usage..). They're still good exp.
Levels 79-80: Reaching maxed Strafe means awesome damage. With the Blizzard combo it allows some unusual hunting places. First place i found: Dark Yeti & Pepe, and it had a quite good exp rate due to the high exp of these monsters (1415 exp !) and the now high killing rate of the blizzard + double strafe combo. This is a reason of maxing Strafe early :) With only one dark ynp per platform it makes hunting them easy, get rid of the regular yetis that get in the way then proceed with the dark ynp. Well Zombies and FoG can still get a regular exp (a bit under 10% an hour) + meso income...
Levels 81-83: Puppet time ! Now you can hunt beasts like Lycanthrope without fear of getting hit.. Get used to the way puppet works, try some strategies, get used to places like squids or vikings by finding sniping + puppet spots, you'll come back later (they're still not very good exp wide, they take too many shots to die). For now, good exp is still obtained from Dark Yeti & Pepe, Lycanthropes are quite OK too (and great mesos income if they drop something), i didnt try Bains since the maps are kinda awkward to navigate through. The best exp is still zombies and FoG (nearly 10% an hour)... I guess the regular yeti or dark yeti maps should provide OK exp too, for a change of pace. You can also flash your Eagle at noobs on Orbis boat, it's always a crowd pleaser (watch the noobs trying to hit the eagle !). A level 6 puppet lasts just long enough to solo Jr Balrog.
Levels 84-87: Puppet now has a very good level, enough to go hunt Death Teddies, Squids, Vikings.. although those are mesos drains ! The various big yeti maps (including Dark y&p) are good exp getters now (i can 2HKO most dark & white yetis). Zombies are 7.5% an hour now but are the main money getters. Squids got me 7-8% at lvl 84, 9% at lvl 85, 10% at lvl 86, and 11.5% at lvl 87. The turn over point was level 85 then, goodbye zombies. NOTE: early blizzard builds allow for easier and faster training at squids.
Levels 88-92: It's the popular level range for Viking parties. I tried these though, and they turned out horrible, very high pot usage for no more gains than Squids. Squids are still the best option IMHO. Iron Arrow works very well on mobs of 3 and more.
Levels 92-102: Squid parties, or soloing Gobies are the most popular options. Squids are the easier, and fastest way to level up now. When soloing Gobies are good exp but heavy meso drain.
Levels 102-110: Gobies are now becoming real good, Squid parties are still good too.
Levels 110+: With the maxed eagle we can go hunt the sharks for awesome solo exp. Otherwise i guess the eternal squid parties and gobies are still the best option, until we get new training areas.
